The Federal Government’s action regarding the half salaries paid to lecturers for October, according to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Benin (UNIBEN) chapter, is an assault against intellectuals intended to demoralize the workforce in universities and lay the groundwork for the system’s eventual collapse, they claimed yesterday.
During a peaceful demonstration on the campus of the institution in Benin City, Edo State, the aggrieved lecturers, led by Ray Chikogu, Chairman of the ASUU’s UNIBEN Chapter, and Success Abusomwan, Secretary, accused the Federal Government of deliberately destroying Nigeria’s university system by depriving university intellectuals of their salaries from March to September 2022.
“This awful course of action taken by the Federal Government is plainly borne out of unpatriotic and selfish purpose, without any respect for the growth and development requirements of this nation,” Chikogu, who voiced dissatisfaction with the President Buhari administration, stated.
āIn the end, the Federal Government is attempting to shirk its duty to ensure that ordinary Nigerians have access to free, high-quality education, in violation of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitutionā.
