World could see ‘nuclear disaster bigger than anything’ it has ever seen if no-fly zone not implemented

Many Ukrainians are taking up arms to defend the country against Russia. Among them is the Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko – who made the tough decision to leave her baby daughter and other two children – and travel back to Kyiv to join the resistance.Ā

“We had reports yesterday of a full encirclement of Kyiv.Ā

“We woke up… Kyiv is still standing, Ukraine is still standing and we are fighting off the aggressors and strong as ever.

“Everything we can do with our own two hands, being present on the ground, we are doing,” she said.

“When we ask for international support, it’s just that we know there are some parts of the Ukrainian defence we cannot cope with, so we ask for it responsibly.”

Ukraine has continuously asked NATO to implement a no-fly zone over its skies – but its requests have been repeatedly denied as it could put the West in direct conflict with Russia.

Ms Vasylenko said while she understands the decision, Ukraine has 15 nuclear power reactors, and “at any point, Russia can send a missile or a rocket to those nuclear power stations”.

“If that happens, and God forbid that happens, and we are doing all we can for that not to happen, but if that happens the world is looking at a nuclear disaster bigger than anything you have ever seen,” she warned.

“It will be the British population, it will be the American population, the Australian population, who will be suffering the consequences.”
